Potential NFL Trades 2017

The trade deadline in the NFL regular season usually comes and goes with little to no surprise, however most seasons will have at least one major in-season trade that nobody sees coming. Last season we saw the Jamie Collins trade from the Patriots to the Browns. These trades happen when good players are reaching the end of their contract and their team doesn’t want to pay. The organization will trade the player before the year ends so they can get something in return for a lost investment. These are the 3 players in contract years that could be traded.

The Buffalo Bills have announced that they will not exercise Sammy Watkins fifth year extension. This means that the former #4 overall pick in the draft will likely test the free agent market. Watkins had a phenomenal rookie season with 65 catches for 982 yards and 6 touchdowns. He followed it up with 60 catches for 1,047 yards and 9 touchdowns. At the end of the 2015 season, he sprained his ankle and needed to have surgery in the offseason. The injury has plagued him and he missed the first 8 weeks of the 2016 season and had a 2nd surgery on the ankle this offseason. If he has a strong recovery he could still get a deal from the Bills, but the organization is in the middle of a rebuild and they will spend the money elsewhere.

NFL 2017 Trade Deadline

The New England Patriots are always considering trading their star players instead of paying them. This is because they evaluate young talent so well that they consistently replenish their roster in the draft. The Pats All-Pro cornerback Malcolm Butler is due for a big payday, and the Pats have already tried to trade the talented young corner. Butler has made important plays when it matters and he will demand to be one of the highest paid corners in the league. Bill Belichick will not pay him, and he will be sent packing before the season ends.

The Jets are cleaning house and have already cut several big-name players including K Nick Folk, T Breno Giacomini, C Nick Mangold, CB Darrelle Revis, WR Brandon Marshall, RB Khiry Robinson, LB David Harris, and WR Eric Decker. The only good player on the team that hasn’t been cut is Sheldon Richardson who they are actively trying to trade. Richardson is a great defensive tackle, and there are several teams that would benefit from his big frame in the middle. The Jets are tanking their 2017 season, and I would expect them to trade Sheldon Richardson for a late draft pick before the season is over.
